Athlete Pin

Ugh. This is HARD!

Obsolete info about how you get the Sports pin for Physical Fitness. It's Still Hard! Check the publication that has all the sports and academic pins in it. You need 30 days of keeping track of exercises and running times, and show improvement. Oh, and you have to meet certain running time and distance minimums. You need to measure out the distance for the run. These kids are in BAD shape and can't do it. If they keep at it, they eventually do improve. Do this in spring when you have long evening light. This requirement used to be in the Fitness pin, but is now in the Athlete pin as the base of the Sports pin for Physical Fitness:
Do 6 exercises for 30 days, record them and show improvement My son did this in the garage
and basement. We chalked dated marks on the door for how high he leaped in place, marks on
the floor for how far he broad jumped, did sit ups, lifted weights, and other things. You need to
oversee this with the child to be sure they get in the habit of doing the exercise correctly and
marking it down on a chart.

This pin's a snap except for Requirement # 2: earn a Cub Scout Sports Pin for Physical Fitness. To do this you have to get 60 points in 90 days; you get half a point for every 30 minutes of exercise, and no more than 5 points in any one day. This translates to 30 hours of exercise. If the Scout convinces an adult to join in the 30 hours, a Sports Letter is earned instead. (Your reaction probably depends on whether or not you consider this a golden opportunity to start a new diet and exercise program.) There's a booklet you can buy at Council that describes the sports pin, talks about stretches, how to build your own exercise equipment, etc., but you can live without it. Just keep track of the dates, times, and running total of points earned so far.

Just about everything your son does counts. Bike rides, walking, swimming, running, basketball, soccer, badminton, etc. Being on a L.A.Y.A. team really racks up points, for practice and games, but your son can do this without joining anything.
