This has changed. It is even easier to do now. You can do academic belt loops for it.
Pretty quick and easy to do.

For requirements #1 - 7, use the handbook.

An easy way to do several requirements for this is to make a quick trip to the library.

#8. Talk to a librarian to find out how books are indexed. Ask about this, and you get about a 1-minute explanation. They don't necessarily use the Dewey Decimal System.

#9. Have the den visit with a blind, deaf or mute person. We didn't do this, but my first guess would be to check the "blue" government pages of the phone book under Government, Washtenaw County, Library, and ask about this at the county's Audio-Visual Library (971-6056) or Services for the Blind & Physically Handicapped (971-6059). They would know of people or places you could contact.

#10. Visit a newsroom or radio or TV station. We didn't do this. Big newspapers only give tours during the week, no weekends. You might try a small local paper (Milan, Ypsilanti, Belleville). The address of Lincoln Community News is PO Box 17 Milan, MI 48160 or call 439-8118. The Yellow Pages list local TV and radio stations. Call and ask. I don't know anything about the radio stations, but you can get tours at Channel 50 WKBD, Channel 2 WJBK and WUOM (radio, Mud Pie Cafe show for kids) if you schedule way in advance. What about the local cable channels, like Community Television Network (769-7422) where the public can go and make their own show?

#11. Use a computer to access a data base. They may do this at school. Or you may have a program at home that fits the bill (spreadsheet, spell checker, encyclopedia CD, etc.). If not, go up to the terminals in the Ypsilanti Library, and press the red, blue or orange keys to access the database of books they have.

#12. Find out about jobs in communications. Check the Reference section of both adult and kids' books at the library or ask the librarian.
