Fitness Pin
Every Webelos Cub Scout has to earn this pin to get the Arrow
of Light Award.
The hard part was Requirement 2. Track your progress for 30 days
in 6 exercises. (EXERCISE IS NOW PART OF ATHLETE PIN. This pin
is now an easy one about nutrition, health, and safety.)
The rest was easy. Also, if you do exercise for 30 minutes continuously,
you could earn a belt loop for physical fitness for the Sportsman
Pin.
#2. Do 6 exercises for 30 days, record them and show improvement
My son did this in the garage and basement. We chalked dated
marks
on the door for how high he leaped in place, marks on the floor
for how far he broad jumped, did sit ups, lifted weights, and
other
things. You need to oversee this with the child to be sure they
get in the habit of doing the exercise correctly and marking
it
down on a chart.
#5. Tell what a balanced diet is and whether your diet qualifies.
Kids might do this in school, maybe. If literature comes home
from school, save and use it. Get a food pyramid off a cereal
box or elsewhere. Talk about how many servings of the different
categories you need. Measure out a serving; most people don't
know how much this is when it's put on a plate. The booklet for
the Physical Fitness Sports Pin covers this stuff, too. Books
in the library will also do it
#3, #4, #6. Talks about smoking, drugs, and alcohol. Use the
handbook. If those Scholastic newspapers the kids get in school
come home, use those. Or whatever you have. At Heritage Day the
sheriff's deputies gave out all kinds of literature. Ask them
for some. The booklet for the Physical Fitness Sports Pin covers
this stuff, too. Books in the library will do it, or borrow
materials
from the 5th grade D.A.R.E. program.
The council office has a free pamphlet on drugs, etc with activities
in it for all age groups from 7-17. Get a copy for each scout.
Also get the leader's copy. You only need to do the pages for
Webelos.
